The federal and provincial governments offer a number of grants, subsidies and tax credits to help offset your hiring costs view the programs below to find out what could be available to support you.
Canada-Ontario Job Grant: This grant will provide direct financial support to individual employers who wish to purchase training for their employees. It will be available to small, medium and large businesses with a plan to deliver short-term training to existing and new employees, and will:
Canada Summer Jobs: Provides a wage subsidy of up to 50% of a full-time student’s salary for their employment over the summer, based on the adult minimum wage. The student must be between 15 and 30 and the business must have less than 50 employees. Businesses must apply by January 30 to be eligible.
Employer Signing Bonus: Provides a $2,000 signing bonus for every new apprentice in a skilled trade with high demand that an employer registers.
Skills Link: Businesses can receive funding to hire and train young Canadians between the ages of 15 and 30 (inclusive) who are registered with the Skills Link program. The youth must be at risk of not finding work for one of the following reasons: the youth did not finish high school, live in a remote area, have a disability, are Aboriginal, are from a visible minority, or face other barriers.
Yves Landry Foundation: Provides funding to hire and train highly skilled workers for the purposes of advancing innovation in a business and to support the adaptation of new technology, new processes or procedures, or a change within the company to support innovation activities. The goal of this program is to prepare and better position existing businesses to enter or increase their share of the global marketplace.
The National Research Council has created Innovation Advisor, with their new Concierge Department. There are about 10 Advisors throughout the country that help local businesses find grants for their new or pre-existing products. The services are FREE. Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit: Contributes up to 10% of a new apprentice's salary provided they are in the first 2 years of their apprenticeship, they are working towards a trade certificate, and are working in a Red Seal Trade.
Apprenticeship Training Tax Credit: Contributes up to $10,000 to hire and train a new apprentice in the skilled trades.
Cooperative Education Tax Credit: Provides up to $3,000 tax credit to hire students enrolled in a cooperative education program in colleges and universities for up to four months. This tax credit makes it feasible for both entrepreneurs and new ventures to hire on temporary summer employees.
